How I am replacing NU.nl with AI

February 2024

News media outlets all have their own flavor, style, and angle. Whether it's a left or right-wing political leaning, a focus on economics, or an emphasis on entertainment, each news site puts its own spin on current events. Moreover, many journalists spend their time rehashing news that other media have already reported, rather than conducting their own research.

AI as an Objective Journalist

It occurred to me that artificial intelligence could do this too, and perhaps even better. An AI can extract the core of an article in a completely objective way, without political coloring or other biases. This led me to the idea for Kort.news, a news website that summarizes articles in a concise and clear format. The site continuously aggregates the latest articles from all major Dutch media such as NOS, NU.nl, De Telegraaf, and more. These articles are then analyzed, summarized, and presented in a clear, concise manner.

For this, I use a language model that applies the principles of Brevity. This means that each article is reduced to its essence, with a clear core message and supporting bullet points. This way, you can see the most important news at a glance.

Every Role is a Prompt

Kort.news goes beyond just summarizing news articles. The site is currently being expanded into a fully AI-driven media platform, where each role is fulfilled by a specialized AI. The articles are written by an 'AI journalist' who is instructed to gather the facts and convert them into clear, objective news reports.

There is also an 'AI editor-in-chief' that determines which articles are relevant enough to publish. This is done based on a number of core factors such as the impact of the article, the scale of the news event, and the reliability of the source. The positivity of the article is also considered to ensure that no negativity bias arises.

An Empire of AIs

But it doesn't stop here. This concept is currently being further expanded into specific domains, with specialized AI journalists for topics such as technology, politics, or economics. Each AI is fed domain-specific knowledge and learns to assess the news value of events within that domain. This way, a fully automated media empire is being built, with tens or even hundreds of AI employees working together to always bring the most relevant, reliable, and up-to-date news. A bit like De Correspondent, but fully driven by AI.
